14-Yr-Old Runs into Burning Building To Save Aunt, 'If She's Going Then I'm Going Too'

Share

Fourteen-year-old James Brown has lived next door to his 96-year-old great-great-great aunt Pauline Caverly for years. So when he awoke to screaming at 2 a.m. on a Saturday morning, he ran outside to see what was happening.

That’s when the teen saw the flames ripping through his aunt’s home.

James immediately sprang into action, running over to make sure his aunt made it out.

He first attempted to open her front door, but the flames made it impossible for him to see anything inside.

“I still ran in and tried to open the door but I could not see her or anything,” he explained.

James ran around to the back of the house, where he discovered his aunt stuck almost eight feet off the ground in a back stairwell trying to escape.

When the teen reached her, she told him he wouldn’t be able to rescue her from the fire, but James was ready to risk it all to save her.

“She told me I probably wasn’t going to be able to do anything and that I wouldn’t be able to get her over,” he explained.

“I told her I’m the only one that can do anything right now, so that’s all that matters (and) we have to go. I was thinking in my mind if she’s going, then I’m going too.”

James was able to save his aunt Pauline, and emergency responders soon arrived to transport her to the hospital. James only suffered minor scratches and burns from the ordeal.

Pauline was treated and released, and is now staying with family. Sadly, the fire destroyed nearly everything she owned, but her family is thankful she is safe and no one was harmed.

“It’s very heartbreaking to come outside and just look at it, to know what it used to be,” James said.

When asked why he decided to rush into the flames, James, who hopes to become a Navy Seal, said he simply knew he needed to help.

“I didn’t really think about it to be honest, it’s just I saw her, knew where she need to be, and it’s not in there,” he said. While he and his family face difficult days ahead, James is confident they will make it through together.

“We’ll get through it,” he said. “We always find a way to get through it, so we’ll do that.”
