Supreme Court struggles with Virginia redistricting case
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court seems to be struggling with how to resolve a case that could help flip control of the Virginia House of Delegates to Democrats.
The justices on Monday heard arguments in a case about the map Virginia was using to choose House delegates. A lower court said the map discriminated against black voters. The lack of clarity about how the justices will resolve the case was odd because they previously allowed the lower court to approve a replacement map.
State officials are preparing to use the replacement map for primary contests in June. It’s seen as favorable to Democrats and could help them gain control of the House.
The Republican-controlled Virginia House of Delegates is defending the House map it drew in 2011. Republicans control the House 51-49.
