Arizona Diamondbacks set team record in stunning 20-5 blowout

It took 20 years, but the Arizona Diamondbacks have finally joined MLB’s 20-run club as they routed the San Diego Padres 20-5 on Saturday night for the team’s best offensive night in franchise history.

The 20 runs sets a new high for the Diamondbacks, whose previous high was 18 runs scored. They also become the 29th active franchise to score at least 20 runs in a game.

The runs came early and often for Arizona, who also had 18 hits in the game. They scored 15 runs through the first four innings and scored at least one run in every inning except the fifth.

All nine starters, including pitcher Robbie Ray, scored at least one run. Six players scored at least two runs and four players scored three runs in the game.

The best stat line of the night, at least for Arizona, came by way of David Peralta who went 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI. Surprisingly, Peralta only had one extra base hit, which was a double, and didn’t contribute to the D-Backs five home runs.

“It wasn’t just a good night for me,” Peralta said. “It was a good night for everybody.”

The weirdest stat line of the night for Arizona had to belong to Jake Lamb, who managed to score three runs without getting a single hit (0-for-4). He scored every time he reached base, which was via two walks and one fielder’s choice.

Will the Diamondbacks win the NL West?

The crazy night had Arizona manager Torey Lovullo perplexed since the Diamondbacks had scored just 17 runs over their five previous games combined.

“I don’t even know where to start, to tell you the truth,” Lovullo said. “You set a franchise record for runs scored in a game, you know that you’ve done something pretty special.”

Lost in the shuffle of Arizona’s historic night was the performance by Wil Myers of the Padres. He accounted for most of San Diego’s offense with the first three home-run game of his career.

The lethargy following the Fourth of July seemed to finally wear off Saturday, as there was an offensive explosion throughout MLB.

Four different teams scored at least 12 runs and three reached the 15-run threshold, the latter of which hadn’t been done in nearly 10 years.

The Diamondbacks will look for their bats to stay hot as they finish off their four-game series vs. San Diego on Sunday. They’ll face Clayton Richard, who has allowed nine runs over his last two starts and sports a 4.46 ERA, which is among the worst in the National League.
