Couple Thinks Ultrasound Might Show Twins, But Scan Reveals an Unexpected Surprise

Share

Skyler and Jamie Scott met on a blind date. They fell in love and got married in July 2004.

Five days after celebrating their first wedding anniversary, the couple welcomed their oldest son, Shayden, into the world. Five years later, Landon was born.

Skyler and Jamie wanted a third baby once Landon was a few years old. They tried to conceive for five years before turning to a specialist.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome was preventing ovulation in Jamie. She decided to try IUI treatment to conceive.

The fertility treatment didn’t result in pregnancy the first month.

After a second round, Jamie’s HCG levels were high enough not only to indicate she was pregnant with their third baby but potentially with more.

When Jamie and Skyler walked into the ultrasound appointment, Shayden was 12 years old, Landon was 7 years old, and the overjoyed parents thought Jamie might be pregnant with twins.

When they walked out, they knew their family of four would be a family of nine by spring!

That meant Jamie was actually pregnant with quintuplets. For much of the ultrasound, everybody saw four babies, but then the woman reading the ultrasound found the fifth.

“And then she kind of did one more pass around and again just takes a double-take at the screen and was again speechless and…she didn’t have to say anything, I just looked at her and said: There’s five, aren’t there?,” Skyler told KTVX.

Jamie went through stages of processing the unexpected surprise of five babies. She was shocked at first.

She admitted that the shock was replaced with worry about the “what ifs” on the second day.

Since then, she has found the experience of carrying five babies to be filled with awe.

It’s also filled with a lot more calories than any other time in the mother’s life. Four thousand calories per day is what her doctor advised.

The family hoped at least one of the babies was a girl. They found out that Jamie is pregnant with three girls and two boys.

Skyler told SWNS, “Hearing that there were five babies was a huge surprise. We moved past the shock phase pretty fast and now it is just gratitude and excitement that we get to be on this journey.”
