Video of a 79-year-old drunk driver plowing through a storefront and narrowly missing a child suggested that driving drunk can be as much of a problem for older people as it is for some younger ones.
The incident happened on May 29 in Leigh, Greater Manchester. The video showed a car slamming into a store front window at a fast speed.
Inside the store, a 6-year-old boy was looking at sweets near the counter. The boy turned as the car slammed through the window and hit him. He wa shoved out of the view of the camera as debris flew everywhere.
An adult, presumably the child’s mother, rushed to the front of the car and began digging through the rubble to rescue her son.
Miraculously, he escaped with minor injuries, according to the U.K. Metro.
Marion Smith, the driver of the car, admitted to failing to provide a sample of breath and driving without due care and attention. Smith’s license was revoked for three years and she was ordered to pay a fine of about $230.
Sgt. John Brennan of the Greater Manchester Police said, “This family popped to the shop to buy some sweets yet found themselves caught up in somebody else’s selfish decision to drive while drunk.”
