Sometimes it’s hard to remember that politicians, especially on the federal level, are people, just like you and me.
They are, though — and not only that, but some of them are quite tough.
For example, Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, age 83, engaged in a push-up contest with a high schooler and won.

In the video, not only did the octogenarian throw down with a lady seriously younger than himself, but the video captured him doing push-ups before she got started, during her attempt, and after she resigned, all the way back to the bench.

That’s determination.
“He wins,” a student announced from the stands.
It’s hard to imagine being that physically fit going into your eighties, but perhaps a physical regimen is part of what keeps Grassley going. The man has been a senator since 1980, and hardly seems the worse for wear, which is good — as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, there are a lot of people who depend on him.
Despite his high position in the federal government, he has ensured his home state’s citizens remain a priority by instituting an annual visit to each and every one of the 99 counties of Iowa, according to his website. That’s pretty impressive.
Nonetheless, I’m glad I’m not in his jurisdiction, because I would not beat him a push-up contest. And that would just be embarrassing.
