President Donald Trump made history a few weeks ago when he followed through on one of his campaign promises and signed an executive order that would strip federal funding from so-called “sanctuary cities.”
While many cities like Chicago vowed to stand up to Trump, Miami-Dade county decided to err on the side of caution. Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s ordered the county to drop its sanctuary city status at the end of January, Fox News reported.
In a recent development, the Miami-Dade County commissioners voted in favor of Gimenez’s order. The vote was 9-3, and this ruling meant that Miami-Dade could officially drop its “sanctuary city” status.

“It’s a harbinger of what’s going to happen across the country as cities are denied the money that they depend on for their budgets and for their special projects,” explained Judge Alex Ferrer, a former Miami-Dade County circuit judge, on Fox News.
The Miami Herald reported that Gimenez defended his decision by stating that it didn’t make sense for the county to risk losing millions of dollars in federal funding over the issue of illegal immigrants in jail.
It is reasonable to assume that more cities will soon follow suit and drop their sanctuary city status. A new poll showed that over 80 percent of Americans don’t approve of sanctuary cites, The Hill reported.

If it comes down to it, a vast majority of the sanctuary cites in America most likely aren’t going to want to lose a significant source of revenue from the federal government over a few illegal immigrants breaking the law — especially given that many of their own citizens support ending the sanctuary city status.
Trump is a man of his word, and he has put sanctuary cites across America on notice — either start obeying the law, or explain to your citizens why you lost millions of dollars in federal funding.
