Two stubborn bar drunks received a painful but deserved lesson in physical justice in Louisiana back in 2016 when, after refusing to obey the orders of a uniformed officer, they were forced to comply the hard way.
The situation began when one of the men refused to leave the establishment in New Orleans’ French Quarter around 4:00 a.m. on a Saturday night in June. Bartenders then flagged down an officer to help, but when he tried to arrest the drunk man who needed to leave, his brother stepped in to try and protect him.
That’s when the officer quickly pushed the annoying brother out of the way (and right into a trash can) and proceeded to take the drunk man down.
The whole encounter can be seen in the somewhat graphic video below:
The drunk man, 39-year-old Michael Hoffman, was then arrested on charges of resisting arrest, public intoxication, criminal trespassing and disturbing the peace.
He should have just left when he had the chance.
Some of the people who witnessed the takedown reportedly later complained of police brutality, but Col. Mike Edmonson, head of the Louisiana State Police, stood by his officer.
“It’s easy to take a tape and pick it apart, but my troopers are dealing with a lot of people who are intoxicated and a lot of unknowns,” he told The Baton Rouge Advocate. “Unless you’re in the heat of the moment, you don’t know what’s going on. You don’t know who these individuals are, where they’ve been and what they’re doing.”
It takes very little effort to complain about police brutality. It takes a whole lot more to accept the responsibility of dealing with drunk men like Michael Hoffman, who for all the officer knew could have been carrying a knife … or worse.
Kudos to this officer for a job well done. Kudos also to his boss for having his back. That’s the type of loyalty and camaraderie we need to see more of these days.
