As Anger Mounts Over Restaurant Booting Sanders, Big Democrats Start Backpedaling Fast

Share

Over the weekend, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was turned away from a restaurant simply because she works for President Donald Trump.

Stephanie Wilkinson, the co-owner of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, refused to serve not only Sanders, but also her entire family.

Claiming her reasoning was to “uphold (her) morals” during this “moment in our democracy,” Wilkinson spoke to the media Sunday to explain that she did the right thing for her business.

“I’m not a huge fan of confrontation,” she told The Washington Post. “I have a business, and I want the business to thrive. This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”

Sanders and her family politely left the restaurant Saturday night and took their business elsewhere.

One of the most upsetting things about this situation is that it wasn’t an “if,” but a “when.” Frankly, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened because someone couldn’t respectfully disagree with the president.

And no matter what your political opinion, everyone knew it.

“It doesn’t matter who holds this job for President Trump, they’re going to be unfairly attacked and ridiculed,” said former Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller in May, according to The Post. “Since Sarah Huckabee Sanders works for President Trump, it seems to be open season on her professionally and personally.”

While Wilkinson’s actions are reminiscent of the grade-school “you can’t sit with us” type of bullying, many on the left were all-too-quick to applaud the restaurant owner for maintaining her “morals” and place the blame on Trump for the “uncomfortable” situation.

Online reviewers immediately descended on the Red Hen’s Yelp and Facebook pages, many leaving five-star reviews for Wilkinson’s “bravery,” while countless others stood up for Sanders and left the restaurant one-star reviews.

And after seeing the mounting support Sanders has gained following the incident, big-name liberals are beginning to attempt — to an extent that fits their agenda — some damage control.

“I think, as far as the restaurant incident, I think the restaurant owner should have served her,” said Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, according to Politico. “I really do. But, this tone is horrible. But again, I think President Trump has created this.”

“Since he’s become president — even before — he’s basically given people license to state things that are ugly and those things then turn into actions, as we can now see,” he continued. “But we’ve got to get away from this, and we’ve got to concentrate on what is important at this moment.”

Former senior adviser to President Barack Obama and CNN commentator David Axelrod chimed in as well, letting everyone know it is his belief that those who praised the restaurant owner’s actions are “appalling.”

“Kind of amazed and appalled by the number of folks on Left who applauded the expulsion of (Sarah Sanders) and her family from a restaurant,” he wrote. “This, in the end, is a triumph for (Donald Trump’s) vision of America: Now we’re divided by red plates & blue plates! #sad”

This tweet, however, came just hours after Axelrod more or less said Sanders had it coming.

“I totally deplore the treatment of (Sarah Sanders),” he wrote. “But come on, (Newt Gingrich). You can’t honestly lecture others about nastiness and defend the behavior of a president who has made gratuitous nastiness the centerpiece of his politics.”

So, in essence, what’s happening to Sanders is “#sad,” but since she works for Trump, she had it coming. When will the hypocrisy end?

Maybe this is the wake-up call the left needs to see that what happened to Sanders can easily happen to them too. Perhaps they’ll realize how easily the American people can turn on them, and that if they keep it up, this monster they’ve created will come for them next — and it won’t be pretty.
