Bernie Flip Flops on Compassionate America, Only Seems To Care When His Agenda Needs To Be Pushed

Share

Comrade Sen. Bernie Sanders has a lot of criticisms of America. We’re a horrible country, guilty of the most tremendous crimes against the lowest among us and abroad. Our people are greedy and hidebound.

Unless, of course, his argument requires the opposite. In that case, we’re all wonderful and our current administration is turning its back on those values.

Let me explain. On Friday, the socialist Vermont senator went on a tweetstorm (or what counts as a tweetstorm when you’re the kind of guy who looks like he spends a half hour complaining to the Capitol cafeteria staff that they keep on serving his oatmeal too hot) about Trump’s immigration policies, which seem to be what the Democrats have latched on to in recent weeks.

“The Trump admin, in its unabashed cruelty, is carving out a unique place in American history. It’s not just support for racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and religious bigotry. They’ve hit a new low by separating kids from their parents and placing them in detention centers,” Sanders tweeted, conspicuously avoiding the fact that one of the reasons behind this is that the ICE can only detain children for 20 days, thanks to a regulation that was enacted under the Obama administration.

But I digress, as always. The tweets didn’t end there.

“This is America, a nation of compassion and generosity,” Sanders wrote. “We will not allow Trump, Sessions or anyone else to continue a policy of ripping babies from the arms of their mothers. Together, we will defeat this inhumane and un-American action.”

At that point, he went back to ranting to the cafeteria staff that soft-boiled eggs are generally served either with or on toast. He probably completely forgot all about the tweets — and he certainly forgot about what he said just a year and a half ago.

Do you think Bernie Sanders believes America is compassionate?

Those who have followed the Senate’s favorite rumpled Clarence Darrow impersonator might remember an exchange between him and Health and Human Services nominee Tom Price back in January of 2017. The Daily Caller certainly did, and it juxtaposed his statements then with what he tweeted on Friday.

The whole kerfuffle began when Price, who was confirmed as secretary but later resigned, called America a “compassionate society.”

That, in Sanders’ eyes, was a huge mistake.

“No, we are not a compassionate society in terms of poor and working people,” Sen. Sanders shot back.

“Our record is worse than virtually any other country on Earth and half of our senior workers have nothing set aside for retirement, so I don’t think compared to other countries we are particularly compassionate.”

Unless your point requires them to be compassionate! In that case, compassion away, America. Bernie Sanders is behind you 100 percent for right now.

I’m not quite sure which of these constructs Sanders personally believes. My guess is the latter, given his record on pretty much everything. However, given that that puts him right in the mainstream of the Democrat Party, he probably has nothing to worry about.
