In an extremely bizarre turn of events, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the outrageous claim that the United States will bomb the Syrian capital of Damascus and then blame the forces of Syrian leader Bashar Assad.
The New York Daily News reported that when he was asked if he expected more American strikes in Syria during a news conference with Sergio Mattarella, the president of Italy, he made the following outrageous claim without evidence:
“We have information that a similar provocation is being prepared … in other parts of Syria including in the southern Damascus suburbs where they are planning to again plant some substance and accuse the Syrian authorities of using (chemical weapons).”

Wait, what?
He also not only denied the Assad regime’s involvement in the chemical gas attack that led to the recent U.S. strike, but also compared the United States’ accusations against the Syrian government to the prelude before invading Iraq in 2003, according to The U.K. Sun.
“This ended with the country’s destruction, with the growth of the terrorist threat and the appearance of the Islamic State on the international stage, no more, no less,” he reportedly said.

There are not a lot of reasons that Putin might make this announcement, and only one of them is really good.
First, it could be the truth. It’s reasonably safe to remove that option from the list of rational possibilities.
Second, Russia could be posturing itself for military action in “defense” of an awful, rotten regime.

Third, hopefully, and most likely, Putin’s scared and acting somewhat irrationally but according to the playbook of the KGB by which he used to be employed. He hasn’t had to deal with a president who knew anything about foreign policy in eight years, but President Donald Trump means business.
Whatever the scenario, it’s unlikely we’ve heard the last of this.
