Classy Melania Bowls Over British Veterans in Wonderful Moment

Share

While President Donald Trump may have made the headlines in England on Friday, Melania once again stole the show. And this time, it was making an amazing move for British veterans — one that even included a bit of lawn bowling.

According to the U.K. Evening Standard, the first lady made a detour Friday to Royal Hospital Chelsea, a retirement home for members of the British army.

Royal Hospital Chelsea is actually older than our country is, having been founded in 1682 by King Charles II in the London neighborhood that bears its name. Its residents are known as the “Chelsea pensioners,” and they’re easily recognized by their distinctive military-style red coats — certainly different than your usual retirement home fare.

She was hosted on the visit by Philip May, husband of British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Melania’s outfits seem to be of significant interest to a great number of people, and if you’re among them, let it be known that she was bedecked in a dress by Victoria Beckham (formerly known as Posh Spice and now as the wife of David Beckham), according to the National Post.

Her shoes were “towering heels” of the red-bottomed variety, indicative of designer Christian Louboutin.

Both Melania and May toured Royal Hospital Chelsea’s chapel. Then, they joined local schoolchildren, where Melania was instructed how to make paper poppies. Remembrance poppies are considered the symbol of commemoration to Brits who died in war.

“Mrs. Trump, 48, greeted the children with a cheery ‘Hello!’ and a big smile,” the National Post reported. “She shook their hands, and asked one of the kids to show her how to assemble a poppy pin.”

“She then sat down with three veterans and 10 children for a short group discussion, as part of the first lady’s ‘Be Best’ campaign, rolled out in May, which focuses on teaching kindness to children and childhood well-being.”

The best was saved for last, with Melania playing a game of lawn bowls with May and the veterans.

When one of the veterans gave her the thumbs up for a particularly good bowl, Melania gave him a high-five.

This was hardly the only event that Melania participated in while she was over in the United Kingdom, as the White House’s official Twitter account was eager to point out.

However, one imagines that the visit to Royal Hospital Chelsea will be the highlight of the visit, particularly in the press.

The first lady has consistently been one of the most popular individuals associated with the administration, with 57 percent of Americans approving of her performance in a May poll.

Of course, this was before everyone lost their mind over a jacket, but one suspects that will fade — especially with events like this.
