Everyone’s heard the buzz about former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina getting the VP nod from Sen. Ted Cruz Wednesday. Despite their new alliance, they have a major past connection that could be troubling down the road.
In September of last year, the Federal Election Commission announced that it had begun a probe into why a Cruz-supporting super PAC had given $500,000 to a Fiorina-supporting super PAC, according to CBS News.
Many super PACs exchange money, but the reason this is unusual was because Cruz and Fiorina were actually campaigning against each other at the time. The FEC sawthat as a red flag — as would many other people.

Here’s what the FEC record showed:
Kellyanne Conway, the president of Keep the Promise I PAC, was asked about this donation to Fiorina’s campaign by CBS.

“Keep the Promise I made the donation in June to Ms. Fiorina at that time because we thought she had important things to say that weren’t being heard, including her poignant and effective criticism of Mrs. Clinton, at the time, the likely Democratic nominee,” she said.
“However,” Conway added, “We are all in for Ted Cruz for President, as our current activities demonstrate, and will continue to support him and his message all the way to the White House.”

Her pro-Cruz PAC was eventually asked to give “adequate purpose of disbursement.” Basically, they needed to do a better job explaining what the money was for.
Now that the Cruz/Fiorina ticket is for real, you have to wonder if Keep the Promise I PAC had some inside communication with the Cruz campaign prior to Fiorina endorsing Cruz and her later securing the running mate position — which would not be appreciated by the FEC.
Overall, Fiorina’s co-captaining of what has begun to look increasingly like sinking ship may not have been her wisest career decision. Who knows how far they will go after Indiana — but one thing is for sure, they’ll attempt to take down Donald Trump with them.
