Dem. Rep. Gabbard Takes Gutsy Stand Against Own Party's Attack on Christian Trump Nominee

Share

Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii slammed members of her own party on Tuesday after one of President Donald Trump’s judicial picks received backlash from Democrats over his religious beliefs.

In October, Trump appointed Omaha attorney Brian Buescher to the U.S. District Court in Nebraska, and his appointment has received resistance from the left ever since.

Much of the resistance is because Buescher is Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus, a charitable Catholic fraternal organization.

As expected, the judicial nominee is pro-life and supports traditional marriage, which are positions the Catholic church has held for centuries.

However, these religious beliefs are no longer acceptable for Democrats like Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono.

In written questions sent to Buescher by the Senate Judiciary Committee, Hirono accused the Catholic organization of holding “extreme positions” on same-sex marriage.

“The Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions. For example, it was reportedly one of the top contributors to California’s Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage,” she said.

Hirono also asked Buescher if he would leave the organization if he was confirmed.

“If confirmed, do you intend to end your membership with this organization to avoid any appearance of bias?” she said.

Do you think Democrats dislike Christians?

Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California also had pointed questions about the judicial pick’s affiliation with the Catholic organization.

“Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?” Harris asked.

Gabbard spoke out against the religious intolerance of her fellow Democrats in an Op-Ed published by The Hill on Tuesday.

“While I oppose the nomination of Brian Buescher to the U.S. District Court in Nebraska, I stand strongly against those who are fomenting religious bigotry, citing as disqualifiers Buescher’s Catholicism and his affiliation with the Knights of Columbus,” Gabbard wrote.

The Democrat also reminded her colleagues that President John F. Kennedy would be disqualified based on the left’s new religious standards.

“If Buescher is ‘unqualified’ because of his Catholicism and affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, then President John F. Kennedy, and the ‘liberal lion of the Senate’ Ted Kennedy would have been ‘unqualified’ for the same reasons,” Gabbard said.

It’s abundantly clear that the modern left despises anyone who answers to a power higher than the government.

They didn’t give a good reason Buescher wouldn’t make a good judge — they just have a demonstrable hatred of the Christian faith.

Gabbard has her flaws, but it takes guts for a Democrat to stand up to her own party’s anti-Christian bias.
