Dem. Sen. Left Stammering for 13 Seconds Straight After Damning Immigration Question

Share

It’s not surprising that liberal politicians who weren’t at all concerned about the treatment of illegal immigrant children under President Barack Obama are suddenly very concerned about the same treatment of those children under President Donald Trump.

It is surprising, however, to see a CNN host expose the hypocrisy and posturing of such politicians.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, appeared on the network Wednesday to talk about the separation of children from their illegal immigrant parents at the border.

Baldwin probably saw it as an opportunity to bathe in praise for her compassionate views while bashing the current administration with impunity.

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin (apparently no relation) had other ideas.

“But here’s a question for Democrats,” she said, “because you hear the president now, on a lot of topics and this one included, looking back to previous administrations, ‘Well, they should have done more,’ right? And so as so many people in this country are certainly outraged by the cages and the thermal blankets and the facilities housing these kids, they were all there in 2014 under President Obama, and my question to you, Senator Baldwin, is, did you speak up against them then?”

The senator stammered as she struggled to come up with a response.

“You know — on the, on this issue that we — get into a moment where we’re making progress and then when it, uh, when it stalls, uh, we turn around,” Tammy Baldwin said. “I think we all need to continue to be focused on it and press it — through. The American people need confidence that we can solve problems. Nobody believes that we have, uh, an immigration system that works. It is broken. It needs fixing. But we’ve just got to resolve to do that.”

Do you think the Democrats are more interested in political posturing than in helping children at the border?

Her non-answer didn’t seem to satisfy the CNN host.

“But were you worried about it then?” she asked. “Did you raise your voice under the Obama administration?”

“You know, in numbers of cases, usually, uh, I remember a constituent who was in detention at the border, uh, arguably, uh, very inappropriately, um, and we, uh, you know, we raised our voice in that instance and many others,” the senator said. “But that’s — uh, we’ve got to do this now in unison. It’s not — enough to do it case by case or senator or House member by House member. We’ve got to resolve to fix this issue.”

We’ll take that as a “no.”

Baldwin, the nation’s first openly gay senator, is co-sponsor of the Keep Families Together Act, which “allows children to be separated from their parents only in the event they are being trafficked or abused by their parents.”

“Tearing families apart and traumatizing children is wrong and immoral,” the senator said in a statement on her website.

Evidently it’s a lot easier to condemn your political opponents in writing, where you don’t have to answer questions about why you ignored the same “wrong and immoral” behavior when it was perpetrated by your own party.
