Desperate Democrats Turn to Mexico While Getting Crushed by Republicans in Fundraising Race

Share

Desperation doesn’t look good.

That’s a basic truism of politics, but with Democrats trailing the GOP in the fundraising race, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez is showing clear signs of looking for a miracle play as he plans a fundraising trip outside the borders of the United States, according to a Daily Caller report.

As if it’s not bad enough that one candidate for the party’s presidential nomination has already campaigned in Mexico, the chief of the whole party is now headed there, too.

According to The Daily Caller, Perez will host three events on Sept. 28 in Mexico City — a location that has exactly zero votes in the Electoral College.

The gatherings include a happy hour that costs a minimum of $50 to attend ($25 for students with identification) and a dinner where tickets range from $1,000 to $15,000, according to Bloomberg, which broke the news.

The registration forms require U.S. passport numbers and state that those attending will be asked to show a copy of their passport’s photo page to show they are American citizens and legally allowed to donate to American political campaigns.

And with 1.5 million Americans living in Mexico, according to Bloomberg, there might be just enough money there for Perez to make the trip worthwhile.

Still, there’s no denying it looks sad for the head of a once-great American political party hustling for a buck on foreign soil, but Perez must feel like desperate times call for desperate measures.

According to Fox Business News, the Republican National Committee raised about $20.8 million in July, giving it $43.5 million available.

Do you think this looks bad for Democrats nationally?

On the Democratic side, the picture was considerably less healthy. The DNC raised only $7.7 million, Fox Business reported.

Even worse, according to Fox Business, the Democrats had $5.6 million in debt versus the GOP’s debt of zero.

So with those facts in mind, Perez is heading south of the border, like former Congressman Robert “Beto” O’Rourke did back in July to try to revive his faltering campaign for the Democratic nomination.

(It hasn’t revived it by much. As of Tuesday’s polls, O’Rourke was still middlin’ in the pack of second-tier candidates with support from 3 percent of Democrat voters, according to RealClearPolitics.)

Mostly what Perez’s Mexico City plans have done is call attention to just how badly his party needs money as it gears up for what’s going to be a brutal election year come 2020.

The party’s last standard-bearer is doing her part — hosting a pricey affair at her Washington, D.C., mansion on Oct. 16 billed as “Dinner and conversation at the home of Hillary Rodham Clinton,” according to a Fox News report.

There’s no doubt Democrats could use the money — especially in light of those brutal July numbers.

But desperation is never, ever a good look.
