DNC Bans Money From Oil Companies. Totally Reverse 2 Months Later. Missed Cash.

Share

Just months after the DNC banned taking money from oil companies, the group reversed its course in a nearly unanimous decision last week, apparently deciding it needed that sweet, sweet petroleum cash.

The new resolution, while throwing a few verbal sops like “for decades, Republicans and their wealthy corporate allies have been chipping away at workers’ rights, weakening unions, and depressing wages – all while giving massive tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires,” is mostly about being able to accept donations from the oil and energy industry.

The resolution reads that “the DNC reaffirms its unwavering and unconditional commitment to the workers, unions and forward-looking employers that power the American economy.”

It also states that “the DNC gratefully acknowledges and will continue to welcome the longstanding and generous contributions of workers, including those in energy and related industries, who organize and donate to Democratic candidates individually or through their unions’ or employers’ political action committees.”

The new resolution — which passed 30-2, according to the Huffington Post — replaces one that was adopted unanimously in June, at the urging of Christine Pelosi, who is no doubt a profoundly talented activist whose respected position in the DNC has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she’s Nancy Pelosi’s daughter — and how dare you even suggest it you privileged misogynist?

“We can RESOLVE today to send a clear message to the polluters and the people: reaffirm our progressive, pro-environment positions, encourage grassroots donors, and reject corporate PAC contributions from the fossil fuel industry that conflict with our DNC Platform,” an open letter from Pelosi to the Democrats read.

However, in spite of the supplications of individuals like Pelosi, most of the rest of the Democrats RESOLVED to get some of that filthy energy-industry lucre.

The new resolution embraces “forward-looking employers” that are busy “powering America’s all-of-the-above energy economy and moving us towards a future fueled by clean and low-emissions energy technology, from renewables to carbon capture and storage to advanced nuclear technology,” the Huffington Post reports.

Not every Democrat was happy.

Do you think that the Democrat Party are hypocrites?

“I am furious that the DNC would effectively undo a resolution passed just two months ago just as the movement to ban fossil fuel corporate PAC money is growing (and Democrats are winning),” R.L. Miller, president of super PAC Climate Hawks Vote, said.

“We talk about how climate change is real and climate change is a planetary emergency, what we need to do is stop taking money from the institutions that have created this crisis,” he said when the original resolution passed.

Of course, no politician is going to pass up the skrilla from the oil industry, which is why the DNC backed off this before the ink was barely dry (and well before the midterm elections).

However, it is an interesting window into just what the Democrats’ values really are.

First, they made  a bit of news by rejecting money from energy companies. Then, when they realized that this would be tantamount to career suicide, they reversed course in a hurry.

Sure, there might be some upset special interests. However, in the end, the Democrat big brass put themselves in a position to get the corporate money they so desperately want. Being seen as doing the right thing is much more important than doing the right thing, after all.

If you ever needed to know who the Democrats really are, well, there you go.
