Even Democrats Can't Stand Tlaib's Profanity-Laced Rant: 'So Disgusting'

Share

Remember when liberals called for civility? It wasn’t that long ago that the left was chastising Donald Trump for being crass. Now, it seems they’re trying to one-up him.

Just hours after incoming Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib was sworn in at the Capitol, the Michigan lawmaker used filthy language in public to attack the president.

While cameras rolled and her supporters cheered, Tlaib declared that Democrats were going to “impeach the motherf***er,” using clearly offensive language to talk about Trump.

One of the lowest-ranking members of Congress may be working overtime to tarnish her office, but luckily not everyone is embracing her. On Friday, Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin appeared on Fox News and was just as appalled by Tlaib’s behavior as everyone else.

“So disgusting. It was horrible,” the West Virginia lawmaker admitted to host Neil Cavuto. “No one should approve of that, and I hope she doesn’t talk to her son that way either.”

The southern Democrat, who is often seen as a moderate, didn’t even try to defend his new colleague’s cursing or excuse her vile grandstanding.

“You know, what can you say? I can’t in any way condone that,” Manchin said. “That’s not how we act in West Virginia. It’s not how we talk about public leaders.”

“We might disagree with each other, but we try to get through it, we try to find a pathway forward,” the Democrat continued.

Are you disgusted by Tlaib's profane language?

It would have been tempting to spin Tlaib’s comments as a slip of the tongue or shrug them off as unimportant. To his credit, the West Virginia senator instead looked into the camera and offered an apology on behalf of his party.

“To act like that is awful, and to speak like that is even more deplorable. I am so sorry,” he said. “I want to apologize to all Americans, any sitting Congressperson, there’s 535 of us there, 100 senators and 435 Congresspeople. We should have better manners than that, I assure you.”

Getting to the heart of Tlaib’s crass statement, Manchin pointed out that it was ultimately a rant about impeachment, but that it was bizarre for even anti-Trump Democrats to casually talk about removing the president of the United States.

“It’s crazy,” he declared. “I mean, here’s the thing, they are going through an investigation. Let the investigation be completed,” the senator cautioned, referring to the ongoing probe by Robert Mueller.

Manchin’s next statement was something the rest of his party should get tattooed on their often obtuse foreheads.

“Every person in this country and our judicial system, every person is innocent until proven guilty, and people want to start speculating just because you don’t like somebody or don’t like their personality, don’t like the way they talk, the way they act. I can disagree with all those things,” he declared. “It’s not the way I was raised.”

Can we just clone Manchin? America would almost certainly be better off. For all the hand-wringing from the left about blunt speech from Trump, even he knows not to drop F-bombs and worse on a public stage. At the end of the day, this comes down to basic decency.

Tlaib is just the latest example of how obsessing over fighting the president and seeing conservatives as evil has clouded the judgment of so many in Washington and the media. Luckily, Manchin has provided a ray of hope that the inmates are not yet totally running the asylum.
