A video has gone viral only 24 hours after it was uploaded to the popular video-sharing site LiveLeak. The video showed members of a “people’s militia” who were fed up with an abusive Iraqi shoplifter and decided to take him down.
The short clip came from Arsndorf, Germany, and reportedly showcased an incident that occurred on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning the video was uploaded to the site and was quickly mirrored on YouTube. However, YouTube took the video down for violating the site’s policy.
This Iraqi shoplifter thought he would get away with what he was doing but the good people of Arnsdorf had another idea in mind. German police confirmed that the incident occurred, according to German news site Die Welt, and stated that the refugee had already been the subject of police attention twice that day.
The refugee had been, in both prior cases, returned by officers to the psychiatric clinic where he was staying.
However, these vigilantes were not about to let this migrant do his dirty work a third time. The video showed a young man wielding two bottles which appear to be wine and arguing with the store attendants who want him to pay for the bottles before leaving.
The “people’s militia” then intervened, tackling the abusive Iraqi shoplifter.
The three vigilantes, called “Burgerwehr” or people’s militia, restrained the man using cable ties until police could come apprehend the suspect.
“It’s sad that we need to rely on a neighborhood watch group,” a witness stated of the incident. Police stated that the vigilantes could face charges for unlawful detention while the refugee may be taken in for his abusive behavior.
While German police may not appreciate that these men stepped in when they needed to, the good people of Germany and abroad applaud them.
