Flashback: DC Liberal Tries to Set Self on Fire to Protest Trump [Video]

Share

In 1963, a Vietnamese monk by the name of Thich Quang Duc set himself on fire in Saigon to protest the Vietnam War. The resulting image of Duc, who died from his injuries, is one of the most chilling of the 20th century.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, self-immolation has become a chosen method of protest for those wishing to gain attention.

There were several more self-immolation deaths by that method in the United States — perhaps not coincidentally, where that photo gained the most traction.

Of course, when the Vietnam War was the top media-hyped story, that’s what people were willing to do. After 2016, the Trump administration became the top “atrocity” that people felt compelled to protest.

However, nobody would be so distraught over the installation of the president that America elected to set themselves on fire — would they?

Yes, this unidentified genius was so unhinged by the Trump administration that, on January 17, 2017 — three days before President Trump’s inauguration — he set himself on fire outside the Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C.

According to WRC-TV, police were originally called to the location on Pennsylvania Ave. to attend to a man “in distress.”

And in distress he was — distressed over the fact that the election hadn’t ended up quite how he had wanted it to.

Do you think the media's vitriol toward Trump has been unfair?

“I was trying to light myself on fire as an act of protest,” the man, who did not give his name, told one of WRC’s reporters.

“Protesting the fact that we’ve elected someone who is completely incapable of respecting the Constitution of the United States.”

He was treated for burns at a local hospital. Police did not give any information on his condition.

A year after this happened, one Twitter user pointed out something very poignant about the strange incident:

This is out-and-out extremist behavior. Yet, the media glorifies it. Sometimes, they even collude with those behaving this way, as CNN did when it changed the headline of a mostly pro-antifa story because antifa didn’t like it.

They’ve created such a furor around the president that it’s hardly surprising some people are actually willing to try and kill themselves to protest his being in office. Thankfully, this man didn’t seem to be successful in his goal. Will we be able to say that the next time it happens?
