Fungus Set To Solve Plastic Problem Liberals Wanted To Spend Millions On

Share

Plastic is the scourge that the left feels it needs to legislate to reduce by any means necessary.

As it turns out, they might just need some fungus to help fix the problem.

According to CNN, a new report from London’s Kew Gardens says a plastic they’ve discovered can break down certain plastics “in weeks rather than years.”

“Experts say the fungus, known as Aspergillus tubingensis, which was found in Pakistan, is capable of eroding plastics such as polyester polyurethane, which is often used in refrigerator insulation and synthetic leather,” CNN reported.

“This is incredibly exciting because it is such a big environmental challenge. If this can be the solution, that would be great,” senior scientist Ilia Leitch said at a news conference earlier this week.

“We are in the early days of research but I would hope to see the benefits of fungi that can eat plastic in five to 10 years.”

Picture what will happen if we find other fungi or plants that can eat plastic.

Will we still have to ban the humble straw? Will giving it to customers result in fines and/or jail time?

The EPA spent over $8 billion in 2017, some of which no doubt went toward plastic. Two states have bans on plastic bags in addition to several cities.

Do you think that human ingenuity can solve environmental challenges?

Now, if we find a fungus that can stop all of this, will the bans stop?

It seems unlikely. After all, a certain amount of this is, in the end, about control.

Even if plastic straws could be eaten away by mushrooms, they would argue, that still wouldn’t make them okay. We would have to regulate the mushrooms, and mushrooms cost money, and we’d have to study their effect on the environment, etc.

If there’s an overarching lesson to be learned here, it’s that science has ways of taking care of waste that we don’t necessarily know about yet.

This isn’t to say that we ought to pollute with impunity or not pay attention to the environment at all. It is to say that human ingenuity is a better way to deal with things than endless regulation.

Will the left learn that lesson? Of course not.

What they’ll learn is that we need to spend more money regulating mushrooms.
