George HW Bush Releases Incredibly Moving First Statement After Wife's Death

Share

Presidential matriarch Barbara Bush — wife of one president, mother of another — passed away at the age of 92 on Tuesday.

Former President George H.W. Bush reportedly stayed by the side of his beloved wife of 73 years and held her hand till the end, according to Time.

On Wednesday, the former president released a statement about his wife’s passing through a family spokesman.

“I always knew Barbara was the most beloved woman in the world, and in fact I used to tease her that I had a complex about that fact,” read the statement from Bush.

“But the truth is the outpouring of love and friendship being directed at The Enforcer is lifting us all up. We have faith she is in heaven, and we know life will go on — as she would have it. So cross the Bushes off your worry list.”

A similar sentiment was given from the former first lady’s son, former President George W. Bush, who urged friends and supporters to not feel sorry for the family, but to rejoice that his mother was in a better place.

“I hope you don’t feel sorry for any of us, particularly me,” stated the 43rd president in Dallas. “I am at peace with what took place, and the reason why is my mother was at peace for what took place. She believes in an afterlife, and was joyously looking forward to that afterlife.”

An official White House statement marking the passage of the former first lady was also released by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, who expressed their condolences over the loss and celebrated the life of Barbara Bush.

The Trump family joins “the Nation in celebrating the life of Barbara Bush. As a wife, mother, grandmother, military spouse, and former First Lady, Mrs. Bush was an advocate of the American family,” the statement read.

“Amongst her greatest achievements was recognizing the importance of literacy as a fundamental family value that requires nurturing and protection. She will be long remembered for her strong devotion to country and family, both of which she served unfailingly well,” the statement continued. “The President and First Lady’s thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mrs. Bush.”

According to Military.com, Trump also issued a proclamation ordering all American flags at government buildings and military installations around the globe be flown at half-staff in honor of the former first lady.

As noted previously, Barbara Bush was both the wife and mother of a U.S. president, only the second woman in U.S. history to have such a claim, joining former first lady Abigail Adams, wife of second President John Adams and mother of sixth President John Quincy Adams.

Though much of America will mourn her loss, supporters of the Bush family can take heart that her family has graciously accepted her passing with confidence that she is now in a better place.
