A 10-year-old schoolgirl was subjected to a horrible punishment when she reportedly tried to fight off rapists trying to attack her.
In the village of Jharkhand in Eastern India, the young girl was found with burns covering 60 percent of her body. When police spoke to her, the girl reportedly stated that she had been doused in kerosene and set on fire after she tried to fight off two men who were trying to rape her, according to the U.K. Express.
Police in the area have file attempted rape and murder charges against the two men allegedly responsible for the attack, The U.K. Daily Mirror reported. Police also detained five other suspects for questioning.
The little girl told police that on Wednesday morning she had been playing outside her home when the men tried to lure her away with the promise of sweets. The little girl refused their offer but the men reportedly did not take no for an answer.
According to police reports, the men dragged the young girl to a stone-crushing unit in the village, stripped her naked and tried to rape her.
The girl fought back and tried to run away, but her attackers caught up to her and, as punishment, they set her on fire and left her for dead in a dry well.
Luckily, a woman who was passing by heard the little girl’s screams and managed to help pull her from the well. The little girl was severely burned and traumatized.
An official associated with the incident told reporters that, “The victim gave her statement to the police” and that they have “registered a case.” According to the official, “the girl said she could identify the men, but did not know them by name.”
According to Arvind Kumar Singh from the Kandra police station, the little girl’s family recently moved from West Bengal into Kandra, and therefore police were investigating if an acquaintance may have been involved in the assault.
