School Accidentally Leaves Disgusting Message on Mom's Voicemail about Her Autistic Son
A mother from Coventry, England, has been left heartsick and angry after her son’s school instructors left a painfully rude message on her voicemail.
The mother was never supposed to hear the harsh language directed at her son, who has autism. But it will probably be a long time, if ever, before Leighanne Bromley forgets the words.
Bromley’s son, Harley, has been a student at Three Spires Academy for over three years. Harley, 10, had recently come down with a cold and was absent from school.
Harley’s instructors left what was supposed to be a well-meaning message just to check on Harley’s wellbeing. But things took a nasty turn for the worse after the staff member thought she had ended the phone call.
The woman could be heard joking with a male staff member, desperately wishing Harley would stay out of school for at least a full week, or two — or better yet, the entire rest of the school year.
The duo collapsed in laughter before hanging up for real, not knowing the damage their jest had just caused. Bromley had to listen to the message several times just to make sure she’d actually heard the conversation correctly.
Sadly enough, she heard every word. “My jaw just hit the floor,” Bromley said.
Harley’s school specializes in teaching children with autism. In fact, over 50 percent of the student population is somewhere on the autism spectrum, according to the school’s website.
Bromley was left disgusted that staff members, employed to work specifically with special-needs children, would have such cruel thoughts about her son. “I was gobsmacked and horrified someone who is entrusted with my son’s care had that attitude towards him,” she said.
The 29-year-old mother confronted the school administration about the voicemail and requested the two staff members involved be suspended. She felt slapped in the face when instead, the employees were only issued warnings.
So far, school staff has not been willing to move Harley into a different class. Bromley is left feeling trapped — sending her son to a school she feels doesn’t want him.
“I’m left in an impossible situation where I don’t want to send him in but I could get in trouble if I don’t,” she said. “I’m still sending him but I’m not happy and nervous about how he’s being treated but I feel I don’t have a choice.”
The academy has apologized for the incident and stated plans for a full investigation.
“We are taking this matter extremely seriously and a full internal investigation is taking place and robust action will be taken where appropriate,” the academy spokesperson said.
