House Democrats Waste No Time, Quickly Attack 2nd Amendment with Background Checks Bill

Share

Remember when Democrats kept insisting they weren’t going after guns? And now that they have control of the House of Representatives what wonderful things have they been doing for the country?

They are letting federal workers go without pay due in order to make it easier for illegal aliens to enter the country. They are also introducing a lot of ridiculous bills and again focusing on impeachment of a president who has committed no impeachable offense.

In the midst of all of that, comes a bill to be unveiled on Tuesday that is focused on guns. The bill and descriptions of it positively drip with gun-grabbing, partisan politics.

Politico reported that the bill, called “H.R.8,” has been given that nickname in honor of Democratic former Rep. Gabby Giffords. Giffords, who has helped with the legislation and was shot eight years ago, on Jan. 8, 2011. (Hence the “8.”)

Note it is not nicknamed in honor of any of the school shooting victims. Or Kate Steinle.

Giffords was one of several people shot in 2011 in Tucson, Arizona. Six people were killed and another 15 were injured.

Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson took to Twitter to share the news about the Democrats’ pending bill.

Politico reported that in a statement, Thompson said that the bill would help save lives. “Since the shooting at Sandy Hook, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force has been fighting for a chance to pass legislation that will help save lives. Finally, with our new majority that ran on helping to prevent gun violence, we will introduce a bipartisan, universal background checks bill.”

“We will hold hearings, we will have a vote, and this legislation will finally pass the House.”

Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi also weighed in on the matter.

“In communities across America, courageous survivors, families and young advocates are showing outstanding courage and persistence in demanding an end to the horrific scourge of gun violence in our nation,” she said in a statement, according to Politico.

“It is an honor to join Congressman Mike Thompson and former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords to answer their call by taking the first step to pass commonsense background checks – which 97 percent of the American people support.”

Do you believe HR8 is really about limiting gun rights?

Where is she getting the 97 percent figure? And how is she defining “commonsense background checks?”

In October 2017, Politifact addressed the issue and none of the polls the liberal fact-checking site examined showed such a number. Further, the question asked was only about requiring background checks on all gun buyers. No further details or exceptions were listed.

Thompson claimed to Politico that the bill was bipartisan but would not name any Republicans who supported it. Politico wrote that “later an aide to Rep. Peter King,” the New York Republican, said he would be co-sponsoring the legislation, something he has done previously.

The Hill noted that the Democrats have tried before to pass similar legislation. But the House at the time was GOP-contolled and such bills failed to pass.

This time, both the Senate and White House are controlled by Republicans, which means that no gun-grabbing bill House Democrats pass is ever likely to be heard from after it is voted out of the House.

But that’s not stopping Nancy Pelosi’s Democratic caucus.

They have a point to make — and the Second Amendment is squarely in their sights.
