Syndicated conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg, known for savagely excoriating GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, surprised many on Monday by suddenly coming to his archnemesis’ defense.
First, he published a column in USA Today maintaining that the attacks being lodged at Trump over having allegedly avoided paying federal income taxes were unmerited and in fact illogical.
“Do any of you willingly give more money to the IRS than you’re legally obliged to?” he asked in the piece. “If the answer is no, does that mean you’re a scrooge? That’s certainly the spin Clinton was going for.”

Moreover, while Trump may have possibly not paid federal income taxes for up to 18 years, as was speculated by The New York Times in a story published this weekend, he has still paid sales taxes, property taxes, state taxes, local taxes and corporate taxes.
Speaking on Fox News later, Goldberg doubled down on his column, saying, “Legal tax avoidance just does not offend me.”
During his appearance on Fox News, Goldberg also brought up Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton’s own questionable financial behavior, especially as it related to the Clinton Foundation.

“The point of the business was to provide a giant sort-of Super PAC and Rolodex of mega donors and Clinton campaign people during the off years when they were in the wilderness of the Obama administration,” he stated.
He also highlighted Clinton’s massive support among Wall Street types.
“It tells you something about the system,” he said. “The more complex you make the tax code, the more complex you make the rules, the more you are rewarding people with access to lawyers and consultants and political connections — and that’s what the Democrats do.”

In other words, Democrats like Clinton have purposefully kept the tax system complicated and out-of-date for the specific purpose of benefiting themselves and their donors.
Trump has worked the system as best he could to keep from paying the federal government any more than he had to, but whereas he now aspires to change it for the betterment of the American people, Clinton wants to keep everything the same.
