Late Night Writer's Sick 'Joke' About Barbara Bush Backfires Big Time
Former first lady Barbara Bush has passed away — but one of the writers for a blatantly left-leaning talk show couldn’t wait to turn the sad news into a platform of mockery.
Mrs. Bush, who held the distinction of being both the wife and mother of presidents, died on Tuesday evening after fighting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The news was not unexpected, but was still somber, with nearly everyone on both sides of the political aisle honoring her life and recognizing the difficult time for the extended Bush family.
Everyone, it seems, except for one of Stephen Colbert’s staff writers. Just hours after the news of Bush’s passing, “The Late Show” comedian Jen Spyra posted a tweet with a very different tone.
“RIP Barbara Bush, the only woman who was 92 for 30 years,” the Colbert show writer taunted.
The post was clearly meant to tease the late first lady for her elderly appearance. Nothing says “comedy” quite like mocking the looks of a woman who lived over nine decades on the same night she died.
Over a thousand people commented on the tweet, but many of the responses called out the liberal show writer for being callous.
“Garbage tweet, for a garbage writer, of a garbage show. Fitting,” wrote Kyle Kashuv, one of the students who survived the Parkland school shooting.
“Liberals spew hate,” noted pundit Kurt Schlichter.
“Wow! That is incredibly insensitive and rude,” echoed another.
For their part, prominent voices on the left took a much higher road, and shared words of tribute and respect for Barbara Bush.
“She showed us what an honest, vibrant, full life looks like,” wrote former President Bill Clinton, who has become unlikely friends with the Bush family while working with George W. Bush on African charities. “Hillary and I mourn her passing and bless her memory.”
“Barbara Bush leaves a legacy of dignity, grace, service and devotion to family,” said Justin Trudeau, the liberal prime minister of Canada.
“Barbara Bush was the rock of a family dedicated to public service, and our thoughts and prayers are with both Presidents Bush and the entire Bush family tonight,” said Barack and Michelle Obama.
To be honest, mocking the late first lady’s white-haired appearance wasn’t the worst insult ever hurled by the left — and there are no doubt even more hateful attacks against her buried in the depths of Twitter.
The real problem isn’t that a random liberal decided to attack a woman who was respected by nearly everyone she met. The disappointment is that a prominent writer representing one of the biggest talk shows on television didn’t pause for one second to consider how distasteful it was.
Liberals including Colbert and his staff seem to have moved so far out of the mainstream that they don’t even realize they’re being vile. Mocking a national matriarch on the night she dies is just par for the course for them… but at some point, they may wake up to find they have no audience left.
