You’ll rarely hear it admitted by the liberal media, but Venezuela is a veritable dumpster fire of a country right now, full of oppressed, poverty-stricken and starving citizens brutalized at the hands of an economically illiterate socialist dictatorship.
Despite the poorly managed but resource-rich nation being racked by turmoil and on the verge of both financial and political collapse, President Nicholas Maduro found time to travel to Cuba to extol the virtues of socialism while railing against the machinations of capitalist nations like the United States, according to Reuters.
Maduro was attending a summit in Havana of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (also known by its Spanish acronym ALBA), a collection of 11 left-leaning nations from Latin America and the Caribbean. It is an international bloc begun by communist Cuba and Venezuela in late 2004 to oppose the U.S.-backed Organization of American States.

While delivering a nearly 90-minute speech, Maduro accused the U.S. of quietly supporting his political opposition in Venezuela, laying the groundwork for an eventual coup that would attempt to remove him from power.
“The only way to reach peace is through words, through dialogue,” Maduro said. “But the reality is, the order has come from Washington for zero dialogue in Venezuela, to make our country explode and give way for a foreign intervention.”
Breitbart reported that Maduro referred to the Trump administration as “very dangerous, very threatening,” but reserved his full fury for Uruguayan diplomat Luis Almagro. The secretary general of the OAS has called for free and peaceful elections in Venezuela, leading Maduro to call him “garbage of garbage,” “filth,” and “traitor of traitors.”
ALBA released an official statement following the summit that declared, “We reject the aggressions and concerted manipulations against our ally (Venezuela). We condemn the interventionist, illegal and pro-imperialist behavior of the OAS secretary general.”

The Maduro-friendly newspaper Curacao Chronicle reported that the summit in Havana was meant to strengthen unity and coordination among the ALBA member nations, which include: Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, Grenada, Nicaragua, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuela. The small coastal South American nation of Suriname was also in attendance as a guest nation of the group.
Left unsaid by the Venezuelan newspaper was the fact that ALBA has been suffering somewhat of late as the region has been shifting away from leftist socialism toward more centrist forms of government, resulting in regional powers Argentina and Brazil dropping out of the alliance, as reported by Reuters.
Meanwhile, the streets of Venezuela are the scene of near-daily violent clashes between government forces and protesters angry over a recent attempt by Maduro’s Supreme Court to invalidate and seize control from the legislature, which is controlled by the opposition party, as well as the imprisonment of one opposition leader and banishment from public office for 15 years for another.
It remained to be seen how much longer Maduro can hold onto power in his failing nation, regardless of any support he may gain from his fellow Latin American socialists, socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, or leftist propagandist Michael Moore.
