Liberal Arrested for Threatening to Murder Congressman Critical of Mueller

Share

As if we needed more evidence that liberals have increasingly become unhinged, a Virginia man was recently arrested after making multiple threats of murder against a sitting Republican member of Congress.

According to The Daily Wire, 38-year-old Roanoke resident Christopher Michael McGowan was arrested and charged with “making a threatening communication through interstate commerce” after he specifically threatened via Twitter to murder Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who is also chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

That committee is looking into the politicization of the DOJ/FBI that led to the Russia/Trump collusion investigation which is now led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The threats are alleged to have started in December, when McGowan tweeted of Goodlatte, “I will do this in full belief I am defending the constitution of the United States. I am not making a joke. I will kill him. Should you believe my doing so would be illegal please arrest me so we can have this discussion in court BEFORE I actually do it. Thank you.”

That threat was reported and earned McGowan a visit from local sheriff’s deputies. McGoward admitted to making the threat but insisted he meant no real harm to anyone and didn’t own any firearms, which was confirmed by law enforcement.

However, the threats began again in April with a series of tweets aimed at Goodlatte that offered more specificity and almost seemed like a challenge to see if he could still legally purchase a gun after making such unhinged death threats to a sitting member of Congress.

One tweet read, “I’m serious, @BobGoodlatte6 …you keep f—ing with our constitution and challenging Mueller and the last you see will be my patriot ass behind a gun you should have long ago have prevented me owning pulling a trigger to your head (SIC). Want me arrested>? GO head.”

Another tweet read, “#1 threatened my congressman with violence #2 stated I would kill people. #3: pretty much declared I would commit a plethora of anti-social behavior, publicly. Whom would like to bet I can purchase a gun three days from now and NOT be locked up in jail? #proudtobeanAmerican”

Do you think the left will act on threats of violence against Republicans?

Despite his threats and arrest, McGowan’s Twitter account remained active as this story was published.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Western District of Virginia, a third threatening tweet on April 1 stated, “…Corruption happens on so many levels and in so many ways…but YOU have truly taken it to an extreme. History will hate you even more than I do. You better get on those gun laws. I am buying one intended for you in 3 days. Can you legally stop me?”

That series of threats resulted in McGowan’s arrest on Friday, and after he received an initial hearing in district court McGowan was remanded to the custody of U.S. Marshals until a bond hearing could be held Wednesday.

“Federal law criminalizes threatening communications made through the internet or a telephone, and these types of threats are not protected by the First Amendment,” U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen said. “As this case indicates, our office will act swiftly to address threats of gun violence.”

RedState noted that McGowan’s threats were but a few of a multitude of similar threats against Republican lawmakers and the president that can be found on social media every day which have been posted by unidentified liberals and celebrity progressives alike.

Given the fact we have already seen a violent attack by a deranged leftist on Republican members of Congress — recall the mass shooting attack on House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and other members of the GOP congressional baseball team — threats of gun violence against Republican politicians must be taken seriously.

Sadly, unhinged threats of violence against conservatives have become all too common recently, prodded on in large part by the hateful rhetoric of the #Resistance movement which is in turn cheered on, glossed over or even “justifiably” excused by a complicit and equally hateful liberal media and elected Democrats.

I mean, Republicans are aiding and abetting President Donald Trump’s efforts to “literally kill us all” with tax cuts, Obamacare repeal, deregulation, repeal of net neutrality, pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord and, of course a refusal to repeal the Second Amendment, so they should be threatened with horrific death, right?

We have already seen members of Congress hurt by this sort of visceral hatred against ideological opponents, and if this unstable and hateful rhetoric from the left keeps up, somebody will eventually wind up dead.

In the meantime, while conservatives should remain calm and attempt to match the online insanity with measured logic and reason, they should also arm themselves for their own protection and train in preparation for the violence the left continues to promise to visit upon us.
