Little Girl Stunned After Elk Responds to Her Call

Share

Talk about the call of the wild.

That’s what young Grace heard when her father, Martin Pettit, took her on an expedition into the great outdoors in search of the mighty bugle elk.

In an Instagram post Pettit published in the fall, it was clear that he and Grace had found what they were looking for – or at least listening for.

If this doesn’t warm your heart, it’s not beating anymore.

Now, that’s a look that no amount of iPhone apps or state-of-the-art earbuds will ever bring to a young girl’s face.

There was no information about the location of the Pettit’s outing, but the reaction to the Instagram post showed that the appreciation for the scene was pretty well universal.

Do kids get enough exposure to nature?

atheramassageToo cool. The first time I heard an elk call, I was baffled. Didn’t sound anything like I’d imagined!

It doesn’t look like the experience was anything like what Grace was expecting either.

And that’s the real lesson about this posting – beyond the sheer enjoyment of watching a young girl get such a charge out of her natural environment. Too many young people are strangers to nature.

The world of 21st Century young people – at least in most parts of the United States – has gotten so circumscribed by regulations that the wonder of taking in the world first-hand is getting lost for too many.

Over-anxious young parents schedule “play dates” lest their toddlers have to learn to make friends on their own.

“Helicopter” parents manage their children’s school performance on a routine basis, instead of forcing kids to make deal with “the system” on their own terms, learning to play by the rules or suffer the consequences if they don’t.

And for too many kids, there’s often barely a moment of unscheduled leisure time between the end of the school day and the end of the day just to get outside and see what a wonderful creation God has given them to explore with their own two feet, their own two eyes — and their own two ears that can be tickled with delight by a sound like young Grace experienced here.

It was the call of the wild Pettit helped provide for his daughter.

Would that more parents could – or would – do the same
