Man Starts Driving, Makes One Phone Call That Puts Him Behind Bars

Share

Inebriation can obviously make people do stupid things from time to time. But being drunk actually convinced a Winter Haven, Florida, man to call the deputies on himself for driving under the influence.

The results might not have been everything he was looking for, though.

On New Year’s Eve, a Polk County sheriff’s dispatcher received a call that wasn’t too far out of the blue. A man by the name of Michael Lester called just after 9 p.m. to report a drunk driver. So far, so normal for a New Year’s Eve.

Then it turned out that Lester was reporting himself.

In a recording posted by WTVT-TV, Lester is heard telling the dispatcher, “I’m too drunk, I don’t know where I’m at.”

The dispatcher then asked what he was calling to report. Lester says, “I’m just drunk driving.”

He then said that he was in front of the Winter Haven Police Department.

It was at the point that the dispatcher begin to ask a series of questions. However, Lester became so annoyed that he said, “I think I’m gonna go get some something to eat and they can catch up with me.”

Do you think guy should have his driver's license revoked?

Again, the dispatcher asked where he had been and Lester drunkenly said, “Ummm … driving around trying to get pulled over, actually.” Additionally, he told the dispatcher that he was even driving on the wrong side of the road.

He got so frustrated that he finally ended the phone call by telling the dispatcher, “You’re not going to get any more information from me. Have a good night.”

Deputies eventually caught up with him, as the Orlando Sentinel reported:

“Lester was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after failing a series of field-sobriety tests. He initially told deputies he drank two beers but later said it may have been three or four. Lester said he had only slept four hours during the past four days, and told deputies he had swallowed meth early that morning, according to an arrest report.”

While the ending of this story landed Lester behind bars, the Polk County Sherrif’s Department had a good laugh at his expense. In fact, Polk County Sherrif Grady Judd told WTVT that, “We called it LOTO: ‘We laughed our tasers off.”

Additionally, he said of Lester, “If you’re stoned enough to report yourself drunk driving, you’re really messed up.”

Grady then asked for all criminals to do as Lester did, and turn themselves in.

“If we could get everyone that’s committing crimes to just go ahead and turn themselves in, just to report it,” he said. “We would appreciate it. It would save time and labor costs.”

Of course, we find ourselves laughing with the sheriff’s office. But despite how funny this is, it’s probably a good thing he turned himself in.

Drunk driving is no joke and extremely dangerous. We all have a responsibility to report it, even if it’s on ourselves.
