Marco Rubio Explodes Over 'Vicious Treatment' of Melania for Her Jacket

Share

The big story involving the first lady this week should have been her visit to South Texas in order to visit one of the facilities where young children who were brought along by their parents when they crossed illegally into the United States are being kept. Instead, most of the focus centered around what she wore.

As you’ve no doubt heard, Melania Trump boarded the plane in Washington Thursday with a jacket emblazoned with the words, “I really don’t care. Do U?”

Inside Edition reported that the jacket was from Zara, and she only wore it while boarding the plane.

Nevertheless, the media made it out as a message stating that she didn’t care about children separated from their parents — which kind of doesn’t make sense when you consider this is someone recovering from kidney surgery who’s taking time out of their schedule to visit children at a detention center. If she didn’t really care, she could have just stayed home.

Melania did have her defenders, however, and one of them was a common Trump frenemy — Sen. Marco Rubio, the man who the president sparred with on numerous occasions during the primaries, and not just about politics.

Nevertheless, when it came to Melania’s motives, Rubio was quick to stand up for her.

“I know for a FACT that (Melania Trump) has been a strong voice of compassion for migrant children,” Rubio tweeted Friday.

“The vicious treatment of her over the last day is a reminder of how Trump Derangement Syndrome, where hatred for him justifies everything, has become an epidemic. Totally lunacy everywhere!!!

Do you think the press overreacted to Melania's jacket?

Indeed, in a week when we tragically lost the venerable doctor who first diagnosed Bush Derangement Syndrome 15 years ago, its close viral cousin — Trump Derangement Syndrome — seemed to be reaching pandemic levels on Twitter.

Well, thank goodness she didn’t wear Crocs.

Now, was this the best sartorial choice she could have made? No. Was this something worth spending more than, oh, five minutes over? No.

This is someone who took time out to visit the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center in McAllen, Texas completely unprompted. She’s not a politician. She didn’t make any of the policies or laws involved in this media-created controversy. She didn’t have to do anything, but was instead moved to.

“She’s seen the images. She’s heard the recordings,” first lady spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said, according to TheBlaze. “The images struck her, as a mother, as a human being.”

“She wants to see what’s happening for herself and she wants to lend her support, executive order or not. The executive order certainly is helping pave the way a little bit, but there’s still a lot to be done,” Grisham added.

And instead, after meeting with these children and officials, assumedly trying to forge some sort of a bridge, we talk instead about a jacket.

Grisham also weighed in on the non-controversy controversy via Twitter:

Perhaps, however, President Trump had the best interpretation:

Given how the press has covered the pseudo-event of the Zara jacket, she has every reason not to.
