Media Paints Trump as Racist with Absurdly Misleading Headlines on Robert E. Lee Comments

Share

The dishonest left-wing media is once again trying to paint President Donald Trump as a racist.

This time it’s in regards to comments he made when speaking about the Civil War achievements of former President Ulysses S. Grant, who opposed the Confederacy as a general for the Union Army.

Speaking to an energetic crowd in Ohio on Friday, Trump made comments about the Ohio-born former President Grant.

Starting out with proper context, Trump explained how President Abraham Lincoln struggled against Confederate General Robert E. Lee because of his great skills as a general.

“So Robert E. Lee was a great general and Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee,” Trump said.

Trump explained that Lee was “winning battle, after battle, after battle” and Lincoln’s generals struggled against him, so Lincoln picked Grant as an alternative.

He went on to explain that Lincoln chose Grant to defeat Lee despite concerns his officials had about Grant’s drinking problems.

“They said to Lincoln, ‘You can’t use him anymore, he’s an alcoholic.’ And Lincoln said, ‘I don’t care if he’s an alcoholic, frankly, give me six or seven more just like him.’ He started to win,” Trump said.

Do you think the media is being intentionally dishonest?

In full context, it’s obvious that Trump was telling an interesting, historically accurate story to honor an Ohio-born president. Trump was speaking in Ohio, after all.

The left wing media chose to focus on Trump’s comments about Lee instead.

The Washington Post published an article with the headline, “Trump calls on blacks to ‘honor’ Republicans with votes, then praises Confederate general Robert E. Lee.”

The problem with that headline is that Trump was actually praising Grant and his success as a general over Lee. Trump talked about Lincoln’s struggles with Lee only to highlight how great Grant was as a general.

“Trump’s speech threatened to reignite a highly divisive debate over America’s racial history with just weeks to go until the midterms,” the article read.

What “divisive debate” is being ignited from Trump’s comments? He made historically accurate statements and praised a Union general for his ability to defeat Lee.

The Post is making a mountain out of a mole hill. There was nothing “divisive” about Trump’s comments. He didn’t defend the Confederacy and he didn’t defend its policies.

The liberal media, however, is trying to start a divisive debate. The article from The Post went on to talk about confederate statues.

“Trump has previously defended statues commemorating Confederate leaders,” the article said in an attempt to reignite the debate.

Predictably, Politico and Newsweek followed a similar formula with coverage of the rally focused on Lee and a discussion of statues.

Only the dishonest left-wing media is able to twist praise about a Union general into praise for the Confederacy.
