A regional leader of what remained of a dangerous Mexican drug cartel was killed in a shootout with Mexican forces, local authorities reported.
Juan Francisco Patron Sanchez, nicknamed “H2,” and seven of his accomplices were killed during the operation, according to local news outlet Milenio.
Breitbart Texas reported that Mexican marines closed in on the group Thursday night. Video from a citizen journalist showed footage of a military helicopter unleashing machine gunfire in the city of Tepic’s Lindavista neighborhood. Milenio reported that Mexican officials were also on the ground and engaged in gunfire with the members of the cartel.
Breitbart reported that the Mexican military was working to arrest Sanchez and tracked him to the neighborhood, where the gunmen stood their ground to no avail.
It wasn’t immediately known if any military personnel were injured during the shootout.
Sanchez was the leader of what remained of the Beltran Leyva drug ring. The ring was allegedly responsible for the death of five military personnel in September, Milenio reported. Fox News reported that the Mexican government posted a statement online confirming that the group was responsible for the death of the officers.

It appears that the Mexican government is cracking down on the drug cartels, which is good news. Mexican cartels control a large portion of drugs that enter the U.S., and it’s good to know that Mexican authorities are committed to addressing the problem.
