Mexican President Steps Up, Takes on Trump Themes To Fight Illegal Immigration into US

Share

He may have entered office with a leftist agenda, the newly elected president of Mexico is pushing policies that benefit both his country and the United States, and he’s sounding some Donald Trump-style themes to do it.

According to The Daily Caller, one of the things Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will be implementing reflects a top priority of Trump’s — both in his presidential campaign and his time in office.

That move is job creation.

To help combat illegal immigration into the U.S., Obrador will be focusing on more jobs in towns along the U.S.-Mexico border. More jobs means less incentive to leave or attempt illegal entry into the United States.

He’s also following another Trump example to help combat illegal immigration into the United States. And this one addresses the taxes on his people.

Reuters reported that Obrador has decreed a lower tax rate for a number of towns along the U.S.-Mexico border. The executive order was issued in part to help deter illegal immigration into the U.S.

The decree will “lower rates for both value-added and income taxes in more than 40 municipalities bordering the United States.”

Trump and Republicans, of course, passed and signed a sweeping tax cut law in 2017 that rejuvenated the American economy. But lower taxes are basically a foreign idea to the American left.

Obrador also implemented another change to help stem the tide. The “minimum wage in the northern strip of municipalities would rise to 177 pesos ($9.00), nearly double the national level, starting Jan. 1, and that fuel prices would be set on a par with U.S. prices,” according to The Daily Caller. (Granted, minimum wage hikes aren’t part of the Trump or Republican plans, but different countries have different priorities.)

Obrador ran, in part, on an anti-illegal-immigration platform, reported Bloomberg, back in July 2018. He planned on creating a special police force for Mexico’s southern border in order to help stop the flow of drugs, guns, and illegal aliens flooding the country.

To help combat the corruption that runs rampant in the police force in Mexico and is part of drugs, guns and illegal alien problem, he also vowed to increase salaries and benefits for law enforcement officers. Trump’s vocal support for American law enforcement was a huge part of his campaign as well.

All of this is very good news for the Mexican people, Trump, and the American people. It’s very bad news for the American left and makes them look very foolish in their attempts to claim that similar efforts in the U.S. are anti-Hispanic.

For Obrador, a leftist politician, to display a willingness to work with Trump and take measures to fight illegal immigration in his country and ours sends a strong message to the American left. It also sends a new message to the Mexican people, which previously have been inundated with messages that America is bad and hates them.

This cooperation and similarity in policies points to positive changes in the relationship between both countries. It opens the door for more good things, benefiting the people on both sides of the border.

They say the proof is in the pudding, so time will tell how all of it will play out.

But for now, at least, there seems to be hope for the American and Mexican people that leaders on both sides are addressing a huge problem.
