Michelle Finally Revealed the Special Gift Melania Gave Her on Inauguration Day

Share

It was one of the mysteries of Inauguration Day, 2017: What was the gift that incoming first lady Melania Trump gave outgoing first lady Michelle Obama?

Now, thanks to the former first lady’s appearance on “Ellen,” we know what it was: A frame.

Of course, given that this was Ellen DeGeneres, there was no shortage of anti-Trump politicizing, but it does make for a fascinating story.

Here was the mysterious gift exchange when it first happened:

During the appearance, which People says is set to air on Thursday, Ellen asked about the gift exchange.

“So, I have a question and I think a lot of people have the same question. So, when the transfer was happening, when Donald Trump and his wife were moving into the White House, there was a gift exchange,” DeGeneres said in the preview clip. “So, what was in there?”

Check it out here.

Do you think Melania's gift was a good one?

“It was a lovely frame,” Obama responded. However, DeGeneres wanted to focus on Trump walking up the steps first.

“He walks up the steps without his wife, just leaves his wife behind, he just walks up there,” Ellen noted.

“Well, there’s all this protocol,” Michelle responded.

“I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like OK, ‘Where am I supposed to put this gift?’”

“And then my husband saved the day. See, he grabbed the box and took it back inside,” Michelle said.

“But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like, ‘What do you do with the box?’”

There are a few observations I can make here:

a) Can’t you be happy someone gave you a gift?

b) This is Trump’s first day on the job. Perhaps complaints about “state visit” protocol can be put off for a little bit?

c) In eight years, you’ve become so helpless through the rigamarole of protocol that you can’t figure out where to put a simple box on your own?

I’ve given former President Obama plenty of guff, but I’ll say this much about the man: He can figure out where to put a present. He possesses the ability to think on his feet and relocate a simple box without getting flustered. After eight years of reduced expectations, I will at least concede that.

Michelle, well, not so much. It was apparently a lovely frame, though, and we have faith she continues to enjoy it. We also express our deepest hopes she somehow figured out where to put it.
