MSNBC Stokes Racism: Give Teachers Guns and They'll Shoot Minority Kids

Share

Give a teacher a gun and they’ll probably shoot an innocent minority student.

That was the seemingly logical conclusion expressed by PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor during an MSNBC panel on Thursday.

The panel was weighing in on a New York Times report that said the Department of Education is considering allowing states to use federal money to arm teachers. According to the report, the DOE is considering Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants that would allow the Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos “to use her discretion to approve any state or district plans to use grant funding for firearms and firearm training, unless Congress clarifies the law or bans such funding through legislative action.”

The DOE has not confirmed such a move is being considered.

Alcindor claims she has spoken with advocates who believe any programs that arm teachers will pose a threat to minority students.

“If you start arming teachers, there are black and brown students … who are being disciplined more than their white counterparts, you could then start seeing statistics where potentially black students are getting shot or in accidents when their teachers are trying to shoot or do gun safety measures,” Alcindor claimed.

She also said the “NAACP and other advocacy groups say, not only are we looking at this as an issue, but it’s also the idea that racially it’s going to be a problem.”

Earlier this year, the NAACP issued a statement critical of a law passed by the Florida legislature in the aftermath of the deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school that would allow teachers to be armed on school grounds.

Should school teachers be armed?

“The NAACP finds the very idea of arming teachers as a solution to gun violence utterly absurd and misguided,” the organization said. “We know that children of color are portrayed and seen as more dangerous, more culpable and less human than children viewed as white. Given this background, how can parents of black children feel comfortable sending their children to a school where guns abound and where the perception of threat could have deadly consequences?”

Alcindor said the idea of arming teachers is part of a stealth campaign by Department of Education Secretary Betsy Devos to move the education department in a right-wing direction.

“Secretary Devos was very controversial coming in and someone who had a very opinionated view of how the federal education system should be run and now she’s carrying this out in a very quiet way,” Alcindor said.

Twitter users were quick to point out the ridiculous logic behind Alcindor’s statement.

Of course, this isn’t the first nonsensical thing said in opposition to guns on MSNBC, and sadly, it won’t be the last. Throw in the racism element — the image of white teachers gunning down minority students for disciplinary reasons — and it’s the perfect talking point for the left, regardless if it makes any logical sense or not.
