With Mueller Gone, MSNBC Now Arguing Trump's Attacks on Press Should Be Investigated

Share

Thank your lucky stars Robert Mueller has more understanding of the law than Joy Reid.

Mueller’s report as special counsel was supposed to prove once and for all that Donald Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election, at least according to many on the left.

Many liberals were counting on that report to bury the president, holding it up as Exhibit A for his impeachment even before it was finished.

But that report turned out to be a dud for Democrats. After two years of Mueller’s investigation, Attorney General William Barr reviewed its findings and confirmed that there is no evidence linking Trump to Russian collusion.

Facts never got in the way of liberals on a crusade, it seems. Over the weekend, MSNBC’s Reid went on a bizarre rant that claimed that that Trump should still be impeached, all because he criticizes the media.

Grasping at straws, the MSNBC pundit implied that the president should be removed even if he didn’t break the law.

Mueller should investigate “impeachable offenses that are not criminal,” the left-leaning political analyst said on Sunday. She rattled off a strange list of things that would specifically not be illegal, including “obstruction of justice, whether or not it’s criminally provable.”

Re-read that last sentence. One of MSNBC’s top analysts is so desperate to impeach the president of the United States that she doesn’t think it matters if something can be proven as a crime before taking down Trump. Talk about moving the goal posts.

Is it time for the media to move forward after the Mueller report?

She then shifted gears to slam the president for his past rants against the left-leaning media, strangely suggesting that complaining about the media wasn’t illegal, but it did violate the Constitution, which would actually make it illegal … or something.

“Attacking the media, which isn’t a crime but it’s a violation of the First Amendment in a lot of ways,” she listed as one of the many weak reasons for Mueller to continue investigating the president.

Reid had clearly put less than two seconds of thought into the argument, and did not explain which ways speaking out against the media violated the Constitution, leaving viewers to scratch their heads.

In fact, as Newsbusters journalist Mark Finkelstein correctly pointed out, exercising free speech by criticizing the media is explicitly protected by the First Amendment, not prohibited.

“Congress shall make no law….abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press,” the Constitution says.

“Note that opening: ‘Congress’ shall make no law. Trump is not the Congress — he’s the president, and doesn’t get to make laws,” Finkelstein wrote.

Indeed, it’s a bit of a tradition for the media and the president to be somewhat at odds — and if free speech doesn’t apply to Trump, it likely doesn’t apply to anyone.

It’s amazing to watch liberals scramble from expecting the Mueller report to nail Trump to suddenly begin insisting that the report wasn’t really that important at all but the president should still be impeached.

“This is not the end of anything,” leftist Rep. Maxine Waters, chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, declared at another point in Reid’s program on Sunday.

“Well, it is the end of the report and the investigation by Mueller, but those of us who chair these committees have a responsibility to continue with our oversight because … there is so much that needs to be taken a look at at this point,” she rambled.

This is Trump Derangement Syndrome writ large.

Instead of following the facts and accepting the findings of Mueller, an investigator they’ve lionized, countless liberals are instead following their rage, with details and evidence being nothing but afterthoughts.

If Democrats and the left-leaning media continue to obsess over removing Trump, they will be seen as nothing but bitter and petty.

After years of this circus, the American people are ready to move forward.
