Warning: In the Muslim world, speaking out in defense of women’s rights could get you whopped across the face with a shoe.
Australian imam Mostafa Rashid learned this lesson the hard way Monday evening during a debate on Egypt’s LTC TV, where he made the unforgivable mistake of arguing that the wearing of the burqa veil by women was a cultural custom, not a religious duty.
According to Australian news service Nine News, this fairly sane argument by Rashid spurred his debate opponent, Egyptian lawyer Nabih al-Wahsh, into hurling personal insults at him and accusing him of being an apostate.
If that wasn’t bad enough, al-Wahsh then removed his shoe and began smacking Rashid over his head with it.
All this because the imam dared to stand up for women. How sad.
The fight reportedly became even more violent afterward, but unfortunately for those viewers who were enjoying watching two men bicker like children, the show’s host cut to a commercial break.
The altercation may be viewed below, though the violence could disturb some viewers:
Al-Wahsh later ranted on Facebook about the altercation, claiming that his debate opponent had converted to Christianity. That was false.
Rashid held a doctorate degree in Islamic ideology from one of Egypt’s most prestigious universities. The only thing that differentiated him from Muslims like Nabih al-Wahsh was his more moderate interpretation of the Quran.
It was this very interpretation that has made him quite the pariah in those parts of the Muslim world where fanaticism is preferred to moderation of any type.
What imam Mostafa Rashid said Monday was reasonable, or so most in the Western world would argue. Among his Muslim peers, however, Rashid is and will likely always remain an outcast, because as al-Wahsh’s behavior perfectly demonstrated, standing up for women’s rights is just not cool.
