Not Joking: NAACP Screams White Supremacy When Gov't Orders Earthquake Signs Posted in City

Share

The NAACP of Portland, Oregon, is claiming that earthquake warnings on old buildings are somehow connected to white supremacy.

The city government is requiring warning signs on brick buildings that are at risk of collapsing in the event of an earthquake, according to The Oregonian.

The policy was approved by the City Council in October, and signs were required in public buildings this week.

Most private buildings will be required to post the signs by March, but churches and nonprofits have two years to comply.

Officials eventually want old buildings to be upgraded because there’s about a 50 percent chance that Portland will be hit by an earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, also known as the Cascade Fault, off the Oregon coast in the next 50 years, according to The Associated Press.

The policy will affect roughly 1,600 buildings, with many of them in areas that have a predominantly black population.

Clearly, the policy isn’t meant to target blacks. The neighborhoods affected just happened to be predominantly black.

In fact, liberal Portland politicians and officials might even argue that they are trying to “protect” people with the warning signs.

Do you think big government is the problem?

But the NAACP claimed that the policy “exacerbates a long history of systemic and structural betrayals of trust and policies of displacement, demolition, and dispossession predicated on classism, racism, and white supremacy,” The Oregonian reported.

The group’s reasoning is that the policy will displace black residents because the buildings might have to be sold, which could result in redevelopment and higher prices.

That could well be one of consequences of Portland’s new policy, but it doesn’t mean “white supremacy” is the motivation here.

Instead of blaming “white supremacy” where it doesn’t exist, the typically left-wing NAACP should go after intrusive government regulations.

Liberal government loves to take it upon itself to “help” people, but it typically ends up doing more harm than good.

In this case, the government is forcing property owners into devaluing their buildings with “warning” signs, which could result in the displacement of low-income residents.

This isn’t a case of racism. This is a case of big government – the kind of big government that left-wing groups like the NAACP usually love to cheer on.

And big government can do a lot more damage if left-wing groups continue stoking its flames.

Maybe even more than an earquake, in the long run.
