President Barack Obama may have met Dallas shooter Micah Johnson just weeks before Johnson was sent home from Afghanistan due to allegations of sexual harassment in 2014.
According to a report from The Daily Beast, which details the path which took Johnson from a member of the armed forces to a hate criminal, Johnson’s Army Reserves unit was put in charge of organizing “a surprise thank you visit” from Obama to Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan before Memorial Day in 2014.
“To all of you, I’m here on a single mission, and that is to thank you for your extraordinary service,” Obama said on the occasion.
“I thank you as your commander in chief because you inspire me … I’m also here representing 300 million Americans who want to say ‘thank you’ as well. When it comes to supporting you and your families, the American people stand united. We support you. We are proud of you. We stand in awe of your service.”

During the president’s visit to the base, Johnson’s sister posted a newspaper clipping of the event, with the caption, “Happy Memorial Day! … Obama went to visit my big bro in Bagram!”
Just over a month later, the Dallas shooter was sent home from Afghanistan. His lawyer says that “somewhere around 7 July 2014,” Johnson was shipped back because of allegations of sexual harassment.
It’s certainly an odd picture. It’s one made even odder by the fact that, since the president often shakes hands and meets personally with troops, it’s entirely likely that he met the Dallas shooter in person. A strange coincidence in a truly evil case.
