Ocasio-Cortez Quietly Throws Border Patrol Under the Bus with Custom Pin at SOTU

Share

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York unwittingly proved why America needs stronger border security at the State of the Union address by wearing a pin displaying the photograph of a 7-year-old migrant child who died in U.S. custody at the border.

Ocasio-Cortez, along with Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, wore a photo of Jakelin Caal Maquin, the 7-year-old Guatemalan child who died shortly after illegally crossing the border with her father.

Democrats placed the blame for the child’s death on U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which had detained the man and his daughter for crossing the border illegally.

In December, Ocasio-Cortez explicitly blamed the Department of Homeland Security for the child’s heartbreaking death.

“Sec. Nielsen has no idea how many children have died under her watch, because she doesn’t care how many children have died under her watch,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “We know of at least one girl. She was 7: Jakelin Caal Maquin.”

Should Ocasio-Cortez be ashamed of herself?

But Ocasio-Cortez’s anger is completely misdirected. The reality is the young girl died from dehydration because of her treacherous journey from Guatemala to the United States.

“After completing a days-long, dangerous journey through remote and barren terrain, the child, who according to the father had not been able to consume water or food for days, began vomiting, went into sepsis shock and after receiving emergency treatment from U.S. Border Patrol Emergency Response Technicians (EMTs), air paramedics and emergency room personnel, died,” the Department of Homeland Security explained on Facebook in December.

But the truth doesn’t seem to matter to Ocasio-Cortez and her leftist colleagues. They wanted to make a political statement by wearing the pin during the address, throwing immigration enforcement and border patrol under the bus by subtly blaming them for the child’s death.

Ironically, the far-left lawmakers’ attempt to slam border patrol actually shows why border security is so important.

First, it’s abundantly clear that the child wouldn’t have died from dehydration if her father hadn’t brought her on the dangerous journey to the border.

The tragic death of this poor child isn’t the fault of border patrol — it’s the fault of her father.

It’s undeniable that there would be fewer attempts to illegally enter the United States if the border were secure and immigrants knew efforts to cross would be futile. If illegal immigration wasn’t an option for the Guatemalan family, they wouldn’t have made the journey to America’s border, and the girl likely wouldn’t have lost her life.

The weak border security of the United States contributes to unnecessary deaths (including murder), drug crime and human trafficking.

Border patrol agents do their best to stop as much crime as possible to keep Americans safe, but they desperately need a wall to properly protect the country.

As President Donald Trump noted in his address Tuesday: “One in three women is sexually assaulted on the long journey north. Smugglers use migrant children as human pawns to exploit our laws and gain access to our country.”

“Tolerance for illegal immigration is not compassionate — it is cruel.”
