New Plan to Pay for Wall - Get Ready Sanctuary Cities, It's About to Get Bad

Share

Securing the southern border with a wall to help protect the nation is a top priority for President Donald Trump.

Achieving that goal is followed closely by the need to successfully deal with liberal sanctuary city policies that deliberately undermine federal enforcement of immigration laws.

Democrats have ferociously blocked any and every effort by the Trump administration to achieve either of those missions, but one congressman may have just figured out a way for Trump to get around that staunch opposition.

According to Independent Journal Review, a Republican member of Congress has devised a way in which the Trump administration can kill both of those birds with one stone via a piece of legislation he introduced last week.

North Carolina Rep. Robert Pittenger introduced H.R. 5663 on April 27, a bill that would cut certain federal funds from sanctuary cities and then use those same funds to help construct a border wall.

As such, not only would the porous southern border be secured by the much-needed border wall, but the increasingly unpopular sanctuary cities that protect criminal illegal aliens would be defunded of taxpayer money in one fell swoop.

“With well over 300 sanctuary cities across the country, it is past time for Congress to take decisive action,” Pittinger said in a statement released to the media.

“Sanctuary cities blatantly subvert the rule of law, incentivize further illegal immigration and endanger law-abiding citizens,” the congressman added. “All the while, criminals and drugs flow across our porous southern border, bringing violence and crime into our towns and communities. This poses a critical threat to public safety and America’s national security as we know that Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations are actively operating in Latin America. Enough is enough.”

If passed by the House and Senate and signed into law by the president, Pittenger’s bill would withhold specific federal funds and grants from jurisdictions that actively prevent their own law enforcement agencies from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

Do you support using federal funds intended for sanctuary cities on border wall construction?

Those funds would then be redirected toward the construction of an improved border wall.

It is noteworthy that this bill has received the endorsement of immigration reform advocacy groups like NumbersUSA and the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

“By simultaneously defunding sanctuary cities and funding construction of a border wall, this legislation offers a comprehensive solution to one of our nation’s most pressing and persistent problems,” Pittenger said.

According to WFAE-FM in Charlotte, the “Make Sanctuary Cities Pay for the Wall Act” has already been referred to four separate House committees for their consideration.

It is unclear how the bill will fare in the committees, but assuming it manages to emerge from there, it would likely be passed by the Republican-controlled House and then sent to the Senate, where it’s future would definitely be up for a heated debate prior to receiving a vote.

Hopefully this bill garners enough support to make it past all of those legislative hurdles and ends up on President Trump’s desk for a signature sooner rather than later.

The safety and security of our nation and citizens depends upon it.
