Recent Letter Shows Kavanaugh Accuser Has Specific Demand Before She Testifies

Share

The woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault more than 30 years ago, Christine Ford, is now demanding a full investigation by the FBI before she testifies before Congress.

The Senate was set to hold a public hearing on Monday for the recent allegations made against Kavanaugh by Ford, according to Time.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley claimed the hearing was meant to give Ford’s allegations the “full airing” they deserve.

“As I said earlier, anyone who comes forward as Dr. Ford has done deserves to be heard …. to provide ample transparency, we will hold a public hearing Monday to give these recent allegations a full airing,” Grassley said.

This hearing required the previous date of Kavanaugh’s confirmation, Sept 20, to be postponed.

However, Ford is demanding that her claims be investigated by the FBI before she testifies, according to Fox News.

“As the Judiciary Committee has recognized and done before, an FBI investigation of the incident should be the first step in addressing her allegations,” Ford’s lawyers wrote in a letter to Grassley.

Is the request for an FBI investigation simply a stall tactic by Kavanaugh's accuser?
Grassley responded by saying “nothing the FBI or any other investigator does would have any bearing on what Dr. Ford tells the committee, so there is no reason for any further delay.”

This situation is likely frustrating for Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who have already agreed to postpone the confirmation of Kavanaugh in order to give Ford a chance to testify. Waiting for an FBI investigation into the matter could result in even more significant delays.

Republicans are already suggesting to go forward with a vote if Ford does not participate in a meeting with the committee.

“Republicans extended a hand in good faith. If we don’t hear from both sides on Monday, let’s vote,” Republican Sen. Bob Corker said on Twitter.

The Senate Judiciary Committee also responded to Ford’s demands Tuesday night with an official statement.

“The FBI has indicated to the committee and in public statements that it considers the matter closed. The FBI does not make credibility determinations,” the statement read.

Of course, Democrats are still backing Ford.

“I agree with her 100 percent that the rushed process to hold a hearing on Monday has been unfair,” Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein wrote in a statement.

It seems like everybody but the Democrats recognize that Ford’s demands are unnecessary. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Democrats just want to postpone Kavanaugh’s confirmation for as long as possible.
