Liberals Seething as "Roadside Attraction" Goes Viral Hours After California Turns Into Sanctuary State

Share

If America has been waiting for a sign, it’s finally arrived — literally.

On New Year’s Day, drivers in California were surprised to find professional-looking signs bolted underneath the state’s “Welcome to California” placards. They appeared to be official, but a closer look revealed a message that was offensive or hilarious, depending on who you ask.

The blue signs read “OFFICIAL SANCTUARY STATE,” accompanied by the satirical line “Felons, Illegals and MS13 (gang members) welcome.”

A third line on the signs mocked Democrats who currently control the state government.

“‘Democrats Need The Votes!’ reads a message on the signs, which are plastered with the Great Seal of California and a donkey, one of the symbols of the Democratic Party,” Fox News reported.

The prank was certainly a well-produced political statement, but California officials were forced to explain to the public that the signs are obviously not official.

“For safety reasons, Caltrans does not permit any unauthorized signs in the state right of way,” the California Department of Transportation explained. “If we haven’t done so already, Caltrans crews will take steps to remove them.”

A spokesperson from that agency told Fox that one of the signs was found on Interstate 15 near the California-Nevada border, while at least one other was located on I-40 near the border with Arizona.

The signs, of course, were strong jabs at California’s new “sanctuary state” status, which went into effect on Monday.

“The law bars police in the nation’s most populous state from asking people about their immigration status or participating in federal immigration enforcement activities in most cases,” Fox explained. “The Golden State is home to an estimated 2.3 million illegal immigrants.”

It’s not the first time a prankster has gone after the liberal state’s sanctuary policies. Back in April, a similar sign was spotted near Malibu, which declared itself a sanctuary city.

“Official Sanctuary City,” the older faux sign declared, according to KSWB News.

“Cheap Nannies and Gardeners Make Malibu Great!’ (Boyle Heights Not So Much.),” the parody message continued.

To be clear, we don’t endorse tampering with a public sign, especially one on a busy highway. With that said, there’s no denying that the message is, in our view, hilarious — and effective.

The best parody has a strong element of truth to it. Messages like “Felons, Illegals and MS13 welcome” and “Democrats need the votes” hit the nail on the head, much to the chagrin of open-borders liberals.

Satire aside, the reality is that sanctuary policies and unenforced immigration laws have serious consequences. Every major country on earth — including Mexico, ironically enough — guards its border and has strict rules for immigrants and visitors.

The United States enforcing its laws is no more “discriminatory” or “anti-immigration” than our southern neighbor doing exactly the same thing, yet the left has turned illegal immigration into an emotional rallying point for its dead-end policies.

California will be the canary in the mine shaft. Their “experiment” as a sanctuary state will have dire results, and the rest of America should pay close attention to how it unfolds.
