An Alabama school district is taking heavy fire over a decision to ban a teenager’s grandmother from attending the prom because she is too old.
That’s right.
Bryce Maine, who attends Eufaula High School, asked his grandmother, Catherine Maine, to be his date for the event on April 8, which also happens to be his birthday, thinking it would be a nice gesture since his grandmother had never been to one before.

However, the Eufaula High School principal thought otherwise and vetoed the idea.
Bryce’s cousin, Sarah Catherine, posted to Facebook that Maine had already bought a dress for the event but that the school was adamant about the decision.
Her post said the local school board as well as a teacher from the school reached out to Bryce to explain why they thought it was a bad idea for his grandmother to attend the prom as his date.

Their reasoning included that if Bryce took his grandmother to prom then there was the possibility that other students would do it as a joke and make the school a mockery. She also said they wanted her to remove her post, which she said would not happen.
KFOR reported that Bryce said the school told him he could not bring his grandmother to prom because she might bring and distribute alcohol to underage students.
Wow.
The school released a statement about the controversy, pointing out that prom attendees must be under the age of 20, according to WTVM.

Steve Hawkins, principal of Eufaula High School said he had denied many requests of students wanting to bring older dates to the prom. He did not, however, elaborate on the fact that Bryce’s request involved his grandmother, not just an “older date.”
It’s heartbreaking that the school will not allow Bryce to share this event with his grandmother.
