Sheriffs Burst into Applause as Trump Rips NYT to Their Face
While President Donald Trump was speaking to a group of sheriffs at the White House on Wednesday, he was met with applause after ripping into the New York Times, which published a hit piece about him that same day written by an anonymous source claiming to be a member of his administration.
The New York Times published the piece with a disclaimer that claimed the author was “a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure.”
The anonymous author claimed there was a “quiet resistance within the administration” and characterized Trump as “erratic” and “reckless.”
After being asked by a reporter about the controversial op-ed, Trump asked the sheriffs, “Can you imagine this?”
“This is what we have to deal with. And you know the dishonest media … But it’s really a disgrace,” he said, according to CNN.
Trump also ripped into The Times specifically.
“The New York Times is failing. If I weren’t here, I believe The New York Times probably wouldn’t even exist,” he said.
Trump is likely referring to his ability to attract media attention — even if it’s negative. The hit piece is a perfect example of how The Times can use Trump to gain traffic and publicity.
Trump’s critique of the establishment media seemed to resonate with the audience of sheriffs who began to applaud as Trump ripped into The Times.
It is no surprise that law enforcement officers would like Trump’s message in an era where the police are often criticized and not nearly praised enough.
The amount of violence law enforcement officers have to face is often overlooked.
According to the National Law Enforcers Memorial Fund, 135 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2016, making it the deadliest for police officers in five years.
In 2017, 129 officers died and 46 of those deaths were caused by gunfire, according to Fox News.
Unlilke liberals and the leftist media, Trump has a history of praising law enforcement.
For example, in 2017 Trump made sympathetic comments at a service for law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“I want you to know patriotic Americans of all backgrounds truly support and love our police,” Trump said according to USA Today.
Trump added that “many of today’s politicians don’t want to say that.”
To this day, Trump is still offering sympathetic messages to the police in a way that most liberal politicians or establishment media outlets don’t want to.
Trump was applauded by those sheriffs because he can sympathize with them for being criticized by the leftist media and not getting enough praise.
With every move he’s made in the White House, Trump’s demonstrated he’s on law enforcement’s side, and the sheriffs seem to know it.
