Police in Dade County, Florida, just released a graphic video of an assault that happened two years ago when a suspect repeatedly stabbed a police officer who was going to arrest him.
After a brutal fight, the officer ended up shooting the suspect, Dominque Jean, killing him.
According to WFOR-TV, the incident occurred in 2013 at a Shell station near Miami International Airport. Jean was caught raising the lid on a gasoline storage tank, purportedly to set it on fire.
When Miami-Dade Police Officer Mario Gutierrez ran over to stop Jean from lighting what would have been a cataclysmic fire, Jean began stabbing him over and over.
“What I noticed right away was 80 percent of that video, I don’t remember. I was doing things there that, to this day, I have no recollection of,” said Officer Gutierrez, who watched the video for the first time when it was released earlier this week.
“He attacked me. He attacked me with a large knife and a screwdriver … It was a very vicious fight. I shut the pumps off, and my intention was to arrest him, take him to jail. So I was gonna tase him, put him in handcuffs, call for fire.”
Eventually, though, Gutierrez had to shoot Jean. He said that one thing kept him strong throughout the life and death struggle.
“The determination to see my family. That to me was the most important thing. I did not want to die and never see them again,” Gutierrez said. He has, although the officer has endured numerous surgeries and frequent nightmares about that awful day.
For his heroics and the fact that he probably saved multiple lives, Gutierrez has received a presidential citation and was also named officer of the year. He’s since returned to the job, and he has a very simple ambition for the rest of his life.
“I’m going to finish my career and then spend my retirement with my family and enjoy that and be in peace until the day I leave this Earth,” Gutierrez said.
According to WSVN-TV, Gutierrez also feels that he’s no different than the millions of other police officers keeping this country safe.
“Without policemen, what are you going to have? Chaos,” Gutierrez said. “You know, we have anarchy, so cops make that difference. We’re that, what they call, that thin blue line.”
