On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump repeatedly vowed that he would “bomb the s***” out of the Islamic State terror group and let the military do what needed to be done to defeat them.
It appears that Trump is definitely following through on that particular promise. In fact, he has given the military so much authority to bomb the terror group that they are actually running out of bombs, according to a statement by U.S. Navy Adm. Harry Harris before the House Armed Services Committee.
“We are short in ‘here-and-now’ basic munitions like small diameter bombs. Our near-peer competitors continue to modernize their weapons systems and leverage new technologies to close capability gaps between us and them. We must maintain our capability to operate in contested environments,” Harris said Wednesday.
One of the primary reasons the United States is running out of bombs is because the military — under Trump’s orders — is actually using them against Islamic State group targets.
Another part of the reason is the cuts in defense spending that have negatively impacted the military over the past few years, but those cuts will undoubtedly be coming to an end under Trump.
“If USPACOM has to fight tonight, I don’t want it to be a fair fight. If it’s a knife fight, I want to bring a gun. If it’s a gun fight, I want to bring in the artillery, and the artillery of all of our allies. But as I said during congressional testimony last year, sequestration could reduce us to wielding a butter knife in this fight,” Harris explained.
“Priorities include long-range and stand-off strike weapons, anti-ship weapons, advanced air-to- air munitions, theater ballistic/cruise missile defense, torpedoes, naval mines, and a Cluster Munitions replacement,” the admiral added.
Harris also emphasized that when the military receives new munitions, they will need better, safer, places to store them.

It’s a very good thing that Trump has given the military so much authority that they are using up all their weapons, but we need to make sure those weapons are being replaced so we can continue to fight the Islamic State group, as well as be prepared for any future conflict.
