The presidential campaign rallies of billionaire businessman Donald Trump have drawn an inordinate amount of attention, from the media, his supporters and his detractors, some of whom show up to protest the controversial candidate.
As protests at Trump rallies seem to be occurring at an increasing frequency, so to is the heated rhetoric and vitriolic responses from his supporters.
That rhetoric and vitriol turned into physical violence the other day when a black protester being escorted out of a Trump rally in North Carolina was sucker-punched by an elderly white man in the crowd, according to KTVI.
78-year-old John McGraw was later arrested and charged with assault following the rally, but not before telling a reporter that the protester deserved to be hit, even going so far as to suggest that he should be killed if he were to disrupt a rally again.
The young protester didn’t retaliate against the elderly man and was not arrested for anything himself, though he was seemingly roughed up a bit by the police as he was evicted from the arena.
Sadly, an outbreak of violence at a Trump rally has seemed increasingly inevitable as of late, owing to the inflamed passions on all sides and the sometimes deliberately provocative actions and words by some of the protesters.
Trump’s repeated, though certainly joking, suggestions that protesters and hecklers should be roughed up by supporters probably hasn’t helped lower tensions either.
Of course, we don’t condone violence against peaceful protesters, no matter how arrogant or disruptive they may be, and would prefer that supporters of the candidate being protested check their anger and allow security to handle the situation, instead of taking matters into their own hands.
